Becoming Good News

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Mark Hanson Presiding Bishop of the ELCA describes what it means to claim this name as our own. http://www.elca.org/mosaic/Identity2006/identityDiscussion.pdf

We are Evangelical; We are Good News, from the Greek euangelion

  1. We are good news a people of God deeply rooted in the gospel of grace, giving our lives in witness and service for the life of the world.
  2. We are good news, to our neighbors, for the world in the face of bad.
  3. We are good news, incarnate expressions of God’s gracious unbounded love.  We are good news active, present, everyday in particular ways, in extra ordinary ways through ordinary means.

Expressing good news through our shared ministry together in synods and congregations and in daily life takes practice.  Here are some practices for being good news:

respectful communication guidelines cardRESPECTful communication guidelines

Guidelines for conducting our conversations together in a way that reduces participant anxiety and encourage fuller involvement. Introduce these guidelines for use at committees and council meetings.  These guidelines shape the space for broad participation and thoughtful listening and speaking.
