How Many Lutherans Does It Take To Change A Light Bulb?
“Change? What’s change? Why change?”
For much of our history Lutheran Christians in the U.S. have held stability and as little significant change as possible as primary, even core, values. Lutheran congregations have provided solid, dependable ministry in communities for decades. These characteristics along with an orientation of gracefulness in relationship with God and with the world have been central to Lutheran presence.
Troubling the Waters Resource from Augsburg Fortress
Troubling the Waters for Healing of the Church is a resource that is developed specifically for White congregational members and others to help them understand the role that White privilege and internalized White superiority has had in shaping their own attitudes, belief systems, cultures and those of the church and society at large. This resource has been designed by White people for White people to equip them with tools that will aid them in addressing and breaking the cycle of socialization that perpetuates racism and sustains an exclusive church. The resource will help White congregational members or groups to embark on a journey of learning from one another as well as from people of color who may enter the river of conversations with them as time goes on. The resource is broken down into 18 sessions starting with the Advent season and ending with Pentecost.
The resource material should be presented by two facilitators, but can be done by one facilitator. Participants are not expected to have a copy of the resource, however, it is expected that each facilitator have a copy. The resource is separated into two sections:
1. Facilitator instruction and guide
2. Participant handout section which may be copied
AntiRacism Training/Teams
Ending racism
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America continues to be confronted with the challenge of dismantling racism. Racism is a sin that permeates society and the church. This pervasive misuse of God’s gift of diversity is an affront to humanity. God’s triumphant love in Jesus Christ calls and empowers us to resist the demonic systems of racism.
The ELCA’s Anti-Racism Ministry
As a result of overwhelming requests from congregations and individuals throughout the ELCA, the Commission for Multicultural Ministries has established a training program for the church. This educational program is the cornerstone of the ELCA’s Anti-Racism Ministry.
ELCA Anti-racism Training
The ELCA Anti-Racism Training is a one-and-a-half day training event offered to members of ELCA congregations, ELCA staff and elected and volunteer leaders, and ecumenical partners. This training offers a comprehensive plan of action that includes developing awareness, knowledge and skills in responding to and addressing racism.
